The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World (1969)

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World (1969)
Styles: Other/Outsider
Label: Third-World Records

An all girl (they're all sisters) group from the 60's. Their dad bought them all instruments and made them record songs before they could really figure out how to play them. The album flopped and the guy that recorded the album ran off with all the money and almost all of the pressed copies of the record. It didn't resurface until the late 70's when it became a collector's wet dream and some girl from Rolling Stone called it mind blowing or something. Totally unlike anything I've heard in a very long time. This is honest, and oddly beautiful music, a total unintentional classic.

Dadamah - This Is Not A Dream (1992)

Dadamah - This is Not a Dream (1992)
Styles: Psych-rock/Drone/Lo-fi
Label: Kranky

New Zealand psych rock band from the early Kranky days (now home to Deerhunter, White Rainbow, Valet, etc). Took a little while to grow on me. Imagine Calvin Johnson singing Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat and you're close.

Half Japanese - Music To Strip By (1987)

Half Japanese - Music to Strip By (1987)
Styles: Alternative/Punk/Noise
Label: 50 Skidillion Watts

I think David Fair sums up his band pretty well himself:

Bongwater - Double Bummer (1988)

Bongwater - Double Bummer (1988)
Style: Alternative/Experimental
Label: Shimmy Disc

Listening to this album all the way through is impossible.
A sprawling two hour epic that embodies the free-wheeling spirit of Beefhearts Trout Mask Replica while still managing to push the style into new and wildly unexpected territories. Will make you laugh, cry, and maybe consider breaking out that astral vase you keep tucked away in your closet, if you catch my drift.
